Aurignac and the Comminges in the Haute-Garonne
Observation Platform to the Pyrenees
Irrespective of the dinosaur remains discovered in the vicinity, the monumental discovery of a lower human
jaw attests to an uninterrupted occupation of the region for 350,000 years. The caves and rock shelters
of the ravine of La Save that were populated into the Middle Ages have furnished among other things the
famous 22,000 year old female figure »Venus« of Lespugue. The Roman province center Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges
distinguishes itself by the numerous well preserved Roman villas that mark the plains, for example in
Montmaurin. Finally, historically important castles adorn the summits of the hills, and like Aurignac,
Montespan or Lespugue are witnesses to history in landscape form with a fascinating and beautiful view
to the Pyrenees.
